An animated comic strip series for young families with a terminally ill parent
Telling my children I had cancer, a disease that would mean I would die younger than their friends’ moms, was one of the most difficult conversations I ever had to have.
The Canadian Breast Cancer Network shared my story, which explains why I launched the “Mommy Has Cancer” series, with their readers.

Mommy Has Cancer’s first animated comic strip is now available to view on YouTube for anyone to view!
In this story, Isabelle gets bullied at school as a result of her mom Val’s cancer treatment side effects. They work together to try and overcome the problem, and manage to do so with a little creativity, buy-in from the school and support from the local Terry Fox Foundation.
What started off as a miserable time for Isabelle has turned into a positive experience, now includes Simon, the younger brother, and has become a family tradition.

This launch has been in the works for about a year. It took longer than planned because my cancer came back, forcing me to part with my hip followed by radiation and intense, and still ongoing, physical rehabilitation. That’s life with a terminal diagnosis!
All that aside, I’m excited to announce that Mommy Has Cancer is launching its first animated comic strip. The first one is called “Because you are bald…” and it launches March 22, 2023 at 7:00 pm MT through Wellspring Alberta’s Digital Storytelling Online Film Festival. This particular story focuses on how the mom’s (Val) terminal illness resulted in her daughter (Isabelle) getting bullied at school. Find out how they overcame the issue and the impact it had on their family, including Simon, the younger brother.
